The Habits of the Elite

Turning one habit into a 20-year passion

When I started running 20 years ago, I never set out to develop a running hobby. I just thought it was something people did to lose weight. It began for me with a challenge from my friend Matt to run a short triathlon—a seemingly impossible test of the imagination for this unathletic kid. But it unlocked something inside me.

Slowly, over a long stretch of time, that evolved from that one-time triathlon into an interest in fitness, progressing to a hobby, and eventually, to a passion. A passion that would take me running to the farthest corners of the world, over seven continents, and through dozens of ultramarathons along the way.

In a recent YouTube video, I broke down the habits elite runners practice that contribute to their remarkable success. It’s a range of simple practices, but they all boil down to the importance of consistency, adaptability, and balance. When you zoom out, they don’t just build success in a running habit—they foster resilience and progress in life.

As I think about it, that’s how most things develop. The only reason I ever progressed past the stop sign at the end of my street was consistency. Showing up over and over again.

One run leads to another and before you know it, you’ve built a habit.

Whether you’re training for a race or pursuing any long-term goal, it’s the daily habits that make all the difference. Small actions, repeated over time, lead to big results. I run because it it stretches my physical limits, refreshes my mind when I’m feeling low, and gets me to some jaw-dropping landscapes.

So, what’s one habit you can build today that will carry you to where you want to go?
