What to Learn from the Oscars

Movie Magic

Exploring how films can make us feel and grow.

It’s that time again—Oscars week! One of the best times of the year. For me, it’s like the Olympics, the World Cup, and Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest all rolled into one—more tuxedos, less mustard.

Let’s be real: The Oscars are far from perfect. They have a long history of head-scratching film decisions that steal the spotlight. But despite all that, it’s still a celebration of what I truly believe in — the power of the movie medium.

Movies are more than mere entertainment. They challenge us, provoke thought, and offer an escape all at once. It’s never been easier to disengage and shut down when firing up a streamer or going to the theater. But instead of passive viewing, actively engaging with the films can be incredibly rewarding.

As creative beings, we’re wired to appreciate and take inspiration from the artistry of others. In turn, this fuels our imagination for creativity and a fuller, more meaningful life.

To purposely engage with a movie, try using the following prompts when you watch:
How did this movie make me feel?
Challenged?
…Provoked?
…Exhilarated?
…Complicit?
…Passively entertained?

By answering these questions, a film becomes more than just a passing of time—it becomes an immersive experience. One that connects the film to your process of learning, growing, creating, and finding joy. This Oscars week, I invite you to dive deeper into your viewing experience.
Whether they’re nominated films or not, they all deserve reflection.

Have you seen anything lately that has prompted you to feel something meaningful?
What did it show you?

Here’s to celebrating the power of film—flaws and all.

For you. For me. For cinema.
See you at the movies!
